Nature’s Gift

No runways for them. All they have to do is to look here and there for a while and flutter their wings to get momentum. And, in a jiffy, they are up in the sky, noiselessly crossing over to their destination. Rain or shine, they peck while they peck and fly when they ought to! Trees are their shelters but, of late, they have to spend their days on housetops, ready to swoop on left-overs thrown by human beings.

They are under several ‘brand names’ and each brand has its own color, habits and an indistinguishably same ‘language’ whichever corner of the earth they are in. So are the alarm-clock birdies who wake you up at 5.00 AM or 6.00 AM, and their calls never betray the country they belong to.

They are nature’s gift to mankind but how many of us enjoy their presence? The moment we see any of them in our courtyard or backyard, we are in a hurry to drive them away. Those of us who are keen on seeing them have to go to a park or zoo! By the way, how much wood would a woodpecker peck, if a woodpecker could peck wood?

First things first. I am one of those retired chaps who are young at heart. I watch cricket matches and jump for joy when Tendulkar scores yet another century. I read newspapers and books too, though I am not crazy about them. I think I have a mind free from hatred and I owe it to the wonders of nature and music. I scribble something now and then and call myself a writer! Though I have settled in Ooty, a lovely hill station in Tamil Nadu—I must emphasize the fact that I was born and brought up in Tellicherry in North Kerala and studied in the good old Government Brennen College. Of and on, my mind goes back to my ancestral house at Tiruvangad in Tellicherry in front of an ancient Sri Ram temple. I am indebted to this wonderful place which inculcated in me a love for cricket and literature. But all said and done, I am an Indian first.

  1. Wonderful post! It is very important to stay connected with nature and also appreciate how wonderful it is to do so, to understand that we, like another creation, are a part of the entire system!

  2. Birds are vanishing from our city skies and we are the poorer for it. At the rate trees are being cut, the woodpecker might not have too much wood to peck 🙂
